Oh my god, what do I need to do? In an unusual step for a guy, “Where’s the manual?”
Find a checklist and or a cheat sheet, a template. Google is my friend and pretty soon I find a cheat sheet from a Toastmaster site in Vegas. The site looks quite good – note to self. Must have a look at this perhaps as a model to make some changes to the Boaters site.
Ok so now the cheat sheet gets me thinking …..maybe I just let the agenda guide me. After all that gives me spots where I do my bit.
With that out of the way. I can now look for the theme of the day. In chatting with my wife some ideas are mooted.
Tiger mums, parenting , personal health, be the BEST version of you.(actually that one can go to the ideas for speeches list)
Back I go to Google. I want something more broad, more widely relatable for the audience and the meeting. This is going to set some tone for the meeting. I have noticed how the theme and speeches blend. Serendipity or manufactured. Who knows.
Anyhow. This search I find a Toastmaster themes of the day list.
One pops out.
“If an opportunity doesn’t come knocking, build a door”
This saying seemed to resonate with me. I think its what I do myself. Its the way these statements affirm some belief. Something to check in with and thus say “yeah this is what I need to do”
So todays theme is about opportunity and how one looks at it from different ways. How to try and make them happen, find them. Give them.
A whakatauki is a Māori proverb.
“Ka whati te tai, ka pao te tōrea” – When the tide ebbs, the oyster catcher strikes.
Grab the opportunity when you can before the tide comes back in and the opportunity is lost.
Today’s theme is really about examining the sayings around opportunity. The motivator and affirmation that answer to “What’s in it for me”
Now all I gotta do is wrap the theme around my introductions and running of the meeting and being TMOD – Toastmaster of the day.
[ Update – post meeting ]
How did it go. I felt relaxed. I was super glad that I had taken the time to get this all sorted well before. I wanted to achieve a multilayered approach to re iterate many times throughout the meeting. Many different ways of viewing opportunities. Quotes abounded. I think there is no real time allowed for the introductions. But I can get in a quote. Perhaps the real theme of the day was affirmation.
Tips of the day – Hitting B on the laptop keyboard will make the projector go black or W for white.
Next time for TMOD I will attempt to run it all without the lectern.
