Louise gets us started and we are 8 minutes behind.
John, our Toastmaster, in great style gets us rolling with a nice twist on TGIF. Who knew that Aloha Friday was the origin of casual Friday.
Is Friday that we like so much because we hate work? Is it because the weekend.
On the back of the theme of the day, our Grammarian offered up the word “procrastination” into the mix.
Note to self: What is that makes me get up at 5:30 am on a Friday morning, now also with winter closing in?
Should I not procrastinate and push the snooze button. Or should I get on to Boaters. I notice now that I have this role to do the blog post. I can chill and listen to the speeches, let the content of the meeting wash over me. Let it reveal itself.
I’ve only just begun. Bang we are running 8 minutes late. Bealey staff most apologetic. Immediately time seems to catch up. All part and parcel of the Toastmasters package. Time constraints. No time to procrastinate.
Excepting if you can sit down and indulge oneself in a blog post. I’m not evaluating. I’m not introducing. I am not any of these roles. A quiet observer. I’ve taken some notes that may or may not appear in this post.
Denise reminds me quite quickly why I don’t procrastinate on Friday’s. Her speech about mentors in life , how various people helped her in life. She also brings it back to toastmasters the mentors and all of us are mentors as such for each other.
Now there it is. How we all arrive and repeat the speeches , the evaluations , recommendations and commendations given and received as we all practice – each Friday.
Deb managed to convert us all to construction workers and gives us a good instructive talk on hearing. From my seat I was hearing the fans of the bar. How bad my hearing is. I can only focus on a fact that over certain decibels you must were ear muffs. Maybe I need to sleep with ear muffs!!
This was a fast speech. Maybe this is the way it is on worksite. Time constrained. Lots of great workplace banter . We are making up time I think.
Natalie our 3rd speaker of the day in a most curious way. She tells us about how she is not a bullfrog. But she keeps doing a leapfrog jump to keep us in check. Maybe there is a bullfrog there after all.
break time only 5 minutes folks.
Here I am quietly thinking, no role or speech. Just keep tapping those keys Donald no one really even knows you are here. No rest for the wicked …I’m dragged up reluctantly for Table topics. I think on my feet whilst walking to the lectern. Got my idea. The fog thickens I manage to spin a tale of my favourite weekend.
I always enjoy this part of the meeting when everyone gets evaluated and the room is listening intently. The learning part of the meeting and the reminder of why we come to Boaters on a Friday morning and keep coming.
So some thoughts. Maybe do without notes when evaluating, use the lights. Move the lectern at table topics.
CRC – Commendation , Recommendation and Commendation.
This is why I get early on a Friday morning. This is all such rich value for us all that gather at Boaters to keep being mentors , to keep learning , to learn how to not procrastinate.
So yeah that’s why I say TGIF.
