The meeting started today with announcements that several people couldn’t be there so our order was changed. A powerful start by Brent Ruru who took on two roles Sergeant at Arms and Toast Master , beginning with Rodney Fords Theme “SUGAR”. Which became a double entendre, being warned about the health warnings of sugar BUT quickly learnt this word is actually a PET name and throughout the meeting learnt that a lot of members had Pet names such as Sugar, Honey,Darling,Helmet,Duck, Daisy ect…
Grammarian: Jennifer Chowaniec came up with a fact about a common phrase “Just Deserts” saying it sounds like Pudding but its spelt the same way as a desert pointing out the phrase is often understandably mistakenly written “just desserts”.
Our first Toastie award winning speaker Kelvin Newman had an entertaining speech from the entertaining speakers Manual titled Three Scooped ice creams. Kelvin started with getting everybody to practise what was to be collectively said at the end ” Ah isn’t that nice”. Kelvin shared that along with his wife they have been involved in the Big Brother/Sister scheme mentoring a young person but last time they did, it became very difficult, so reluctantly and by putting up a wall as to protect themselves emotionally took on another one, Kelvin then proceeded to tell us an amazing story about this and making a neat connection with the young person and reiterating how privileged we are as a society and best of all have three scoops of ice cream. finishing with everybody saying “Ah isn’t that nice”.
Our second speaker Danny De Hek shared a speech about a “speech” from the Humorously Speaking manual, Danny said “why is laughter good?” Its better than crying! and its the best medicine, talked about famous comedians and stated we must have humour in our speeches. Danny talked about competitions and what they judge you on. Gave advise to dance around the stage to extend the time of a speech, warned to watch language on stage. Danny concluded with more advise on using a mind-node app to assist in writing a speech in 45 minutes! Overall quite humorous.😃
Speaker 3 Barbara Miller a very experienced speaker. Non manual speech on Sugar and Health. Not just as a pet name but actually Sugar and Health!
Barbara started by singing a song😃 about sugar as a friend. And as a friend sugar can be quite dangerous. Sugar can release endorphins similar to when falling in love.
Table topics was very funny with Deb McAlpine giving people an opportunity to debate fictional subjects on opposing sides which was about Sugar!
Evaluators gave excellent feed back and recommendations, including a hint to slow the speaking down.
Great meeting, great learning
