As I was sitting, listening and enjoying today’s meeting. I was able to enjoy the meeting.
Time was literally not on our side today. A late start meant the entire meeting was an effort in trying to catch up.
Leadership the theme and courtesy a true companion to that theme.
But It was the word of the day that got me. How apt it was for todays learning for me.
The formulaic welcoming , introducing speakers , evaluating speakers all are part of being courteous. Part of this courtesy is evaluating in the third person. Today I received the greatest feedback about this very thing. I must add also given with the greatest respect and received in the same manner. We are all learning and practising.
It is this third person is sitting on my shoulder, reminding me. “Hey you remember to not say you did this and you were great at this”. If you do this then you really are being discourteous to the audience and to the person you’re evaluating.
One has decided to talk to one person only.
If I listened to that voice reminding me I will be able to say “John spoke with great vocal variety”
“He has ticked that goal with aplomb.”
For my next courteous evaluation. I think I should write notes in the third person to practice and remind me that I am speaking to everyone.
It also can allow me to not indulge on the content alone be carried away by the content.
I must also include another courtesy and that is include a recommendation and or a challenge.
The great courtesy is that the lift and support that I think I am giving will actually be more respectful more palatable, more courteous to the receiver and to the meeting.
Each role it seems is teaching me each week the what , why and how one is a Toastmaster and learning the fine courtesy of evaluating. As a bonus to all that a fine leader and Toastmaster to boot.
Courtesy is part of the gift.
