Wow, what a fabulous morning…28 people attended this week’s Boaters meeting!
Dennis kicked us off as Sergeant at Arms.
David was Toastmaster, returning after 2 months travelling in Europe. The theme for the week was ‘surprises’
Grammarian Colin challenged us to really listen and to particularly look out for interesting turns of phrase, something which he tested us on at the end of the meeting.
Speaker one was Kevin Warwood, speech title “Parking: the magic word is performance”. We learnt about road rage in carparks, carpark efficiency, poor performance parking, and phone apps to assist us in finding a park!
John Kelly stepped in to be speaker two with speech title “Table Topics”. With our club competition on the 9th, this was a timely speech. We learnt the 5 things to remember in order to deliver an excellent table topics speech:
1. Visit the Boaters website and download the article ‘Impromptu Speaking’
2. Be enthusiastic and confident
3. Visit the International Toastmasters website and download the judges guidelines
4. State an opinion
5. Deliver with a coherent structure…opening, body, conclusion
Table topics were led by Esther who took her inspiration for this week’s topics from sing lyrics.
Up first Roydon…what kind of cake was left out in the rain in McArthur’s Park?
Next Brent F…what is the soundtrack to culinary greatness?
Helen…is friendship something you can learn?
Greg…who is the inspiration behind his song lyrics? (with special mention to Nigella)
Geoff…what was the day you found out ‘why’ you were born?
Steve…my right to privacy trumps national security
Debs…a soundtrack for John Key
Thank you Boaters for an informative and inspiring meeting.
